Seasonal Changes in Winnipeg

We are in that classic transition period where the calendar says spring, but the messy roads from our late season clipper remind us we are not quite out of the woods. So much to do, so much potential for the rest of the year, and a winter so long we almost forget what we liked doing last year!

        This Weekend

        This Weekend in Food

If you are forcing an early spring barbecue this weekend, Save On Foods is your best bet for the grill. They have fresh ground beef sitting at $8.50, which is a solid deal if you want to brave the patio in a thick sweater.

For a quick side dish to go with those burgers, SuperStore has sweet potatoes for $3.46 and broccoli for $5.00. You can throw them in the oven to roast while you are warming up inside.

        Grocery Game Plan

NoFrills is the undisputed champion for your dairy run this week. A four litre jug of Beatrice two percent milk is only $4.22. That completely beats out SuperStore at $5.94 and the $6.35 price tag over at Sobeys.

You will also want to grab your eggs at NoFrills while you are there. Their No Name large grade A eggs are sitting at $4.05, which just barely edges out the $4.16 price at SuperStore.

If you are stocking up for some weekend baking, butter prices are holding remarkably steady across the city right now. You can find standard salted butter for exactly $5.99 at FreshCo, SuperStore, and Sobeys
Store-brand bread is steady throughout the city (~$2.50) with name brands spiking up to 7, so watch your dollar!

Watch out for tight downtown parking if you are heading out, as multiple events, concerts, and shows are clustered together this weekend. Slow down for potholes on your daily drive, since they are multiplying quickly with the current thaw. You should also check any flood-prone spots around your property today or tomorrow, as the latest provincial outlook shows an elevated risk for low-lying lanes.

If you have kids, remember that today, April 10, is a non-instructional day for the Winnipeg School Division, which might require a sudden shift to your childcare plans. Finally, do not let the calendar fool you into thinking winter is entirely gone; we are still dealing with near-freezing temperatures and messy roads from a late-season clipper

        What’s coming This Week?

Get ready for the provincial park campsite scramble. Reservations open this week, and you need to be online right at 7:00 a.m. to get a spot. Cabins and yurts open Monday, April 13. Popular campgrounds like Birds Hill, Winnipeg Beach, and Grand Beach open on Tuesday, April 14. The rest of the parks roll out through Friday, April 17.

Keep an eagle eye out for temporary no parking signs on your street. The city street sweeping operation is kicking off. Ignoring those cardboard signs will get you a $150 ticket and a towed car.

        1. Take your bike in for a tune up right now. Every cyclist in the city is dusting off their bikes at the same time. If you wait, you could face a four week delay at local repair shops.

        2. Book your kids into spring and summer rec programs this week. The city leisure guide is already live and spots fill up fast.

        3. Get your fishing gear ready for May 9. The Southern Division officially reopens for walleye then, followed by Lake Winnipeg on May 16. Expect the boat launches to be incredibly busy those weekends.

        4. Watch for subsidized tree giveaways in early May if you want to plant a cheap, climate friendly tree. Be ready because they sell out in a matter of hours.

        5. Prepare for the St. Norbert Farmers Market to move outdoors on May 16. Get there right at 8:00 a.m. for parking, and leave your dog at home, as pets are strictly banned.

        Peg City Deadlines

Take off your studded tires before April 30. They become illegal to drive on after that date.

Book your Mother's Day brunch reservations for May 10 right away. Premium spots book up weeks in advance, and secondary locations will fill up right after them. Expect garage sales to erupt across the city that same weekend, so plan your route early for the best bargains.

Curbside yard waste collection starts the week of April 28 for Area A and early May for Area B. Do not leave your paper yard bags out too early, or the spring rain will turn them into a soggy mess that the garbage crews cannot pick up. If you need someone to handle the heavy lifting for your spring cleanup, you can easily find a verified pro in the HeadsUp Local Directory.

HeadsUp! What's Coming & Food Price Report

Late winter in Winnipeg has a rhythm of its own. The sun is stretching later into the evening, but the sidewalks are still icy, the wind still cuts, and the calendar is suddenly crowded. This is the week where grocery runs, festival traffic, holiday schedules, and Valentine’s plans all overlap
