This Week’s Heads-Up

This Weekend
This Week in Food
Don't Let the Sun Fool You: We have a beautiful, mild weekend ahead, but don't assume summer is fully here. The forecast shows a jump to 17 degrees on Sunday, but temperatures are expected to drop near zero or subzero overnight by early next week. Keep those tender annuals and tomato seedlings indoors!
The Patio Rush: The very first wave of restaurant and brewery patios are opening. If you want to enjoy a drink in the sun, go early or make a reservation. The first sunny Saturday is always a scramble, and the best outdoor tables will be gone by noon.
Dump the Standing Water: You might not be thinking about mosquitoes yet, but the first adults are already emerging. Take a walk around your yard this weekend and empty out old tires, kiddie pools, and clogged eavestroughs to stop the summer hatch in its tracks.

2-WEEKS OUT
Mid-May Magic: The Downtown Winnipeg Farmers' Market kicks off its outdoor season on May 14. Pro tip: go early on your lunch hour because the best local baking and preserves sell out fast! Summer day camp registrations also open mid-month (some as early as May 15 at 7:00 a.m.) and they fill up in minutes.
The May Long Weekend (May 15-18): Victoria Day is fast approaching. If you missed the early Manitoba Parks bookings, set up email cancellation alerts right now. Keep in mind that while street parking is "free" on the holiday Monday, you are still required to follow the posted maximum time limits so you don't get a ticket.

3-4 WEEKS OUT
Early June: Mark your calendars twice for swimming lessons! The city’s summer leisure brochure drops on June 4, but registration doesn't open until June 16. Early June also brings University Convocations (U of M from June 1-8; U of W from June 11-12), meaning campus-adjacent and downtown restaurants will be much busier than a standard weekday.
Summer Prep: Start plotting your alternate commuting routes, too, as the city's heavy road construction season begins in June. Finally, line up your late-June childcare now, as the school year ends June 29/30, and regular summer camps often don't overlap perfectly with those final days.

PEG LIFE
The Elm Pruning Ban is On: A gentle reminder that the annual provincial pruning ban for healthy Elm trees runs from April 1 through July 31 to prevent Dutch Elm disease. Unless a branch is a direct safety hazard, put the saw away until August.
Overnight Street Sweeping Traps: The winter parking ban is over, but the city's spring street sweeping blitz operates on just 24 hours of notice. Keep an eye out for temporary electronic signs and paper door tags on your street to avoid waking up to a towed car.
Tick Checks are Back: It’s that time of year again. If you're walking the trails, staying near the woods, or taking the dog for a hike, make tick checks a routine part of coming home.
Hold the Line on Gardening: It's the golden rule of Winnipeg gardening: our actual average last frost hits in mid-to-late May. Let the garden centers hold onto those beautiful, finicky perennials and tender vegetables until after the May Long Weekend.
Grill Season Ready: If you're jumping the gun on barbecue season this weekend, local grocers are fully stocked. You can grab fresh beef, pork, and chicken at places like Superstore, No Frills, and Save-On-Foods, along with all the buns and fresh produce you need to welcome the warm weather from your backyard.
